School History

International School of Hellerup was founded in 2009 under the name “Østerbro International School” in order to meet the needs of the International English-speaking community in Copenhagen. In the first year, the school accepted students from Prep Class through 6th grade and opened its doors with a total of 63 students.

The school has had an excellent After School Program since opening in 2009 and has expanded its services, before and after the school day with the Morning Club for PYP students and a more comprehensive programme after school, now called the After School Care Programme (ASCP). In addition to the ASCP, ISH offers several After School Electives for the Upper PYP and MYP students to choose from. In 2011 the school started its Student Support Services which has now grown to incorporate the School Psychologist, the Learning Support Assistant, the Health Visitor and the EAL Coordinator.

ISH opened its school library in early 2012 and it now holds a collection of around 3,000 titles. The library has magazines and newspapers, as well as digital resources. The library is a welcoming space for the entire school community. At the beginning of 2012, our school applied for candidacy in the IB Middle Years Program and we applied for candidacy for the Primary Years Programm in 2013. We received IB accreditation for the MYP and DP in May 2015 and the school plans to go through the authorization for the PYP later this year. We plan on becoming an IB World School in 2015.

In July 2015, the school moved to a new campus in Hellerup with larger classrooms, more purpose built spaces, more playground space for younger students and a cafeteria for lunches. In August 2017, the school name was changed to “International School of Hellerup” in order to create an identity that better reflected the location of the new campus.
