Ms. Sӧderstrӧm was born in Sweden and she has lived in Gӧttingen in Germany, San Diego CA and Pawtucket RI, USA.

Ms. Sӧderstrӧm conducted most of her studies in Sweden, in Gӧteborg, Stockholm and Karlstad, were she completed her MA in Education for the Compulsory School Later Stages.

She has taught in the Swedish national school system and for the past 8 years she has taught and worked as IB MYP Coordinator in Stockholm. She is also a Visiting Team Leader for evaluation and verification visits for the IBO.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"A country would be nothing without its mix of people, and that the country is so biker friendly."

Rachel Castillo

Language and Literature

Ms. Castillo was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa in the Midwest region of the United States. She studied secondary English education at Morningside College, in Iowa, for which she received her B.A. She taught in various secondary schools within the United States prior to moving overseas to Suzhou, China.

After a year in China, she relocated to Tokyo, Japan and taught in her first international school.

After two years in Tokyo, Ms. Castillo chose to leave Tokyo and move to Copenhagen in order to be with her significant other. In her free time, Ms. Castillo enjoys reading, writing, playing with her cats, visiting museums, talking to her family back in Iowa, and exploring Europe.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"My favorite things about Copenhagen are the many, lovely parks and canals which are perfect for quietly reading on a sunny day, the close distance of things while still being able to feel the bustle of a lively metropolis, and the diverse mix of cultures. I also love the food and atmosphere of Papirøen and Torvehallerne."

Bob Van Leeuwen

Individuals & Societies, History

Mr. van Leeuwen was born and raised in Hoorn, about 40 km north of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam, where he also obtained a Master’s degree in Social Science. He also holds a Master’s degree in International Relations in Historical Perspective at the University of Utrecht. Mr. van Leeuwen has worked in a Dutch high school as a Dutch language and social science teacher.

Before moving to Denmark, Mr. van Leeuwen travelled and worked around the globe in China, North-Korea, Mongolia and Cuba. He also lived in the south of France for two years working as an entertainer on one of the biggest campsites in Europe. Most recently, he was volunteering in Saint-Louis, Senegal. Here he met his Danish girlfriend, with whom he now lives with in Copenhagen.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"I feel at home in Copenhagen because the city reminds me of Amsterdam. Cycling in Copenhagen makes me a happy man. My favourite place in the city is the cycling bridge (Brygge Broen - Cykelslangen) connecting Islands Brygge and Kalvebod Brygge (Fisketorvet)."

Johanne Druitt

Music

Ms. Druitt is from Melbourne, Australia. She completed a Bachelor’s degree in Music at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth. In 2006, she received a scholarship from the Goethe-Institut, which allowed her to move to Berlin for four months to further her studies in Guitar and to learn German. Afterwards, she moved to Switzerland where she obtained two Masters degrees from the Luzern University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Music Performance and Music Education.

She has taught in various primary and secondary schools in Australia and at the International School of Zug and Luzern in Switzerland.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"Many things! I like how Copenhagen is a relaxed, yet culturally vibrant city. I love biking, the ocean, the cafés, the language, salt-licorice and flødeboller!"

Hasan Khan

Mathematics and Physics

Mr. Khan was born and raised in Multan, one of the ancient cities in Pakistan. He holds a bachelor degree in Physics from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara. He earned a departmental Scholarship from the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland to pursue his Master's degree in Particle and Nuclear Physics.

He has been involved in teaching High School Physics and Mathematics for two years at international schools.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"It's small. It's big. It's beautiful."

Pernille Ingwarr

Danish Language and Literature

Mrs. Ingwar graduated from N. Zahles Seminarium with degrees in Danish literature and English as a second language. She worked at a private Danish school for ten years before moving abroad with her family.

She then spent ten years in Africa, Senegal, South Africa and the US where she taught at international schools as well as having her three children in the IB school system. Her two daughters have both graduated from IB schools.

Returning to Denmark in 2006 she continued to work at international schools, with a brief one year stay in Geneva, she is looking forward to starting at ØIS as a Danish teacher in both the PYP and MYP.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

“To be close to my family and friends and being in ‘Wonderful Copenhagen’ where there is so much to do and it is safe to get around.”

Dorte Søndergaard

MYP Danish, DP Language B

Mrs. Søndergaard was born and raised in Copenhagen. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Danish Literature and Family and Consumer Science. After teaching at a Danish school a couple of years, she moved to the U.S. with her family.

During her 27 years in America, she founded the Danish American Center's Danish language program and taught there for 20 years, while also teaching students at middle school Special Education.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"Returning to Denmark at this stage of my life is a gift my husband and I are enjoying every single day. Mostly I love being close to the part of my family I was far away from for so long and to live in the middle of the city."

Katie Fox

English Language Acquisition

Ms. Fox is from Colorado, though she spent every summer in Maine in the United States. During her studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, she spent one year studying at Paris II in Paris.

Katie started her teaching career and earned her master’s degree in New York City. Europe called again, and so for two years, she taught in Helsingborg, Sweden.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"I enjoy the bike culture in Copenhagen, all the delicious bakeries, and the affinity for candles to compensate for gray skies."

Ms. Moore is originally from New York, where she completed a BFA in Sculpture and Photography from New York State University’s Purchase Conservatory, and did her masters residence in Visual Language and Painting at the School of Visual Arts.

She is certified in teaching English as a foreign language, and has a degree in primary and secondary English and Arts education from Metropol University’s teachers college in Copenhagen. Ms. Moore has taught Visual Art and Design, English and Drama in International Schools in Portugal and Denmark.

She maintains a private studio, writing and exhibiting regularly, as well as contributing to international environmental initiatives.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"Spending a long sunny summer morning by the Øresund, watching the windmills tilt over a hazy sea while Swedish islands hover at the horizon, then strolling down to spend an afternoon at Louisiana with friends, music and art."
