Monika Pedersen

Secondary School Principal

Monika Pedersen is originally from London, England. She completed her further education in Manchester and Sheffield. She began her teaching career in North West London and then discovered the world of the IB. Originally an English teacher, she widened her scope to be an IB English teacher, Head of Department and Academic Dean and finally a Secondary School principal for several years. She has worked in an IB school outside London as well as in central Germany.

She states,"the job is always interesting and brings many challenges. It makes you reflect and grow and to retain a sense of humour. Yet, the focal point is always the same: it is all about the students, teachers, and community!'

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"The rich variety of opportunities that a major city can offer, which is coupled with a friendliness and sense safety of a small town."

Abenaa Uttenthal

IB Coordinator, Middle Years Programme

Ms Uttenthal was born in New York City, USA, and she is very proud of her Ghanaian heritage. She has taught in four countries, mainly in secondary schools in the United States, Ghana, Sweden and Denmark. She holds an IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning and a Master’s Degree in Communication for Development. Her initial teacher training was in special educational needs, and she also holds a certificate to teach English as an additional language. She grew up as a third culture kid and strives to support TCKs, like her, to meet their full potential and build meaningful connections despite all of the change they experience.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"I like that Denmark is a country with a well preserved history and proud culture. I especially appreciate how the culture is expressed through delicious food."

Evis Qeska

IB Coordinator, Diploma Programme

Mr. Qeska was born and raised in Albania. He has been living in Denmark for more than 10 years now. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Economics and Business Administration and a Master's degree in Finance from Århus University as well as an international teacher certificate from Cambridge and ECIS. Before coming to ISH, he worked as a teacher in different schools in Jutland. He currently leads workshops for the IBO and conducts school visits as well. He teaches Business Management in the DP besides his coordination duties.

Rachel Castillo

MYP English L&L

Ms. Castillo was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa in the Midwest region of the United States. She studied secondary English education at Morningside College, in Iowa, for which she received her B.A. She taught in various secondary schools within the United States prior to moving overseas to Suzhou, China.

After a year in China, she relocated to Tokyo, Japan and taught in her first international school.

After two years in Tokyo, Ms. Castillo chose to leave Tokyo and move to Copenhagen in order to be with her significant other. In her free time, Ms. Castillo enjoys reading, writing, playing with her cats, visiting museums, talking to her family back in Iowa, and exploring Europe.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"My favorite things about Copenhagen are the many, lovely parks and canals which are perfect for quietly reading on a sunny day, the close distance of things while still being able to feel the bustle of a lively metropolis, and the diverse mix of cultures. I also love the food and atmosphere of Papirøen and Torvehallerne."

Bob van Leeuwen

MYP I&S, DP History, CAS Coordinator

Mr. van Leeuwen was born and raised in Hoorn, about 40 km north of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam, where he also obtained a Master’s degree in Social Science. He also holds a Master’s degree in International Relations in Historical Perspective at the University of Utrecht. Mr. van Leeuwen has worked in a Dutch high school as a Dutch language and social science teacher.

Before moving to Denmark, Mr. van Leeuwen travelled and worked around the globe. He cherishes the warmest memories from the time that he lived in the south of France for two years working as an entertainer on one of the biggest campsites in Europe. The best choice of his life was to do volunteering work in Saint-Louis, Senegal. Not only did he experience the importance of volunteering, he also met his Danish girlfriend, with whom he will get married in the summer of 2019.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"Copenhagen is actually an Amsterdam 2,0. Cycling in Copenhagen makes me a happy man. My bike brings me to my favourite spots in the city: Tivoli during Christmas time, Amager Strand in the summer and Parken to see a match of FC København."

Johanne Druitt

MYP Music

Ms. Druitt is from Melbourne, Australia. She completed a Bachelor’s degree in Music at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth. In 2006, she received a scholarship from the Goethe-Institut, which allowed her to move to Berlin for four months to further her studies in Guitar and to learn German. Afterwards, she moved to Switzerland where she obtained two Masters degrees from the Luzern University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Music Performance and Music Education.

She has taught in various primary and secondary schools in Australia and at the International School of Zug and Luzern in Switzerland.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"Many things! I like how Copenhagen is a relaxed, yet culturally vibrant city. I love biking, the ocean, the cafés, the language, salt-licorice and flødeboller!"

Pernille Ingwar

MYP Danish L&L

Mrs. Ingwar graduated from N. Zahles Seminarium with degrees in Danish literature and English as a second language. She worked at a private Danish school for ten years before moving abroad with her family.

She then spent ten years in Africa, Senegal, South Africa and the US where she taught at international schools as well as having her three children in the IB school system. Her two daughters have both graduated from IB schools.

Returning to Denmark in 2006 she continued to work at international schools, with a brief one year stay in Geneva, she is looking forward to starting at ISH as a Danish teacher in both the PYP and MYP.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

“To be close to my family and friends and being in ‘Wonderful Copenhagen’ where there is so much to do and it is safe to get around.”

Dorte Søndergaard

MYP Danish LA, MYP 1 Advisor

Mrs. Søndergaard was born and raised in Copenhagen. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Danish Literature and Family and Consumer Science. After teaching at a Danish school a couple of years, she moved to the U.S. with her family.

During her 27 years in America, she founded the Danish American Center's Danish language program and taught there for 20 years, while also teaching students at middle school Special Education.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"Returning to Denmark at this stage of my life is a gift my husband and I are enjoying every single day. Mostly I love being close to the part of my family I was far away from for so long and to live in the middle of the city."

Katie Fox

Individuals and Societies

Ms. Fox is from the United States. She grew up in Colorado, hiking and skiing the year away, and spend summers on an island in Maine connecting with family. During her studies in History and French at the University of Colorado at Boulder, she spent one year studying at Paris III in Paris.

Katie returned to the US and started her teaching career while earning her master’s degree in New York City. Europe called again, and so for two years, she taught in Helsingborg, Sweden, where she met her Danish husband who lured her to wonderful Copenhagen. Beyond her love of teaching, she loves to read, knit, and sew.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"I enjoy the bike culture in Copenhagen, all the delicious bakeries, and the affinity for candles to compensate for gray skies."

Elise Dupuy

MYP French LA

Ms Dupuy was born and raised in France, in the Alsace region. She went to university in Strasbourg, where she completed a Master’s Degree in English language and Anglo-American studies. During her time at university, she completed a year abroad in Cork, Ireland. The urge to travel was great, so when she came back from Ireland, she decided to complete a Master’s degree in French as a Foreign Language, with the ambition to travel and teach French abroad.

Before moving to Denmark, she spent fifteen years in England, where she got her Post-Graduate Certificate in Education and taught languages in two big secondary schools. In the last four years, she also taught on the teacher training course at the University of Sussex.

Outside of teaching, she loves travelling, playing volleyball, reading and knitting.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"It was love at first sight with Copenhagen when I first visited many years ago. I love the slower pace of life, the bike culture and the fact it has everything a capital city has to offer, but on a human scale. Let’s not forget the hygge!"

Elizabeth Moore

MYP/DP Visual Arts and Design

Ms. Moore is originally from New York, where she completed a BFA in Sculpture and Photography from New York State University’s Purchase Conservatory, and did her masters residence in Visual Language and Painting at the School of Visual Arts.

She is certified in teaching English as a foreign language, and has a degree in primary and secondary English and Arts education from Metropol University’s teachers college in Copenhagen. Ms. Moore has taught Visual Art and Design, English and Drama in International Schools in Portugal and Denmark.

She maintains a private studio, writing and exhibiting regularly, as well as contributing to international environmental initiatives.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"Spending a long sunny summer morning by the Øresund, watching the windmills tilt over a hazy sea while Swedish islands hover at the horizon, then strolling down to spend an afternoon at Louisiana with friends, music and art."

Mette Rønde

Mette Rønde is from Denmark and she has lived 17 years abroad in France, Norway, Mexico and USA. She has a Master’s Degree in Danish language/literature and Philosophy, and she has a bachelor in Education and Second language acquisition. Mette has taught literature and language acquisition in 1-12 grade.

Sarah McNulty

MYP Visual Arts

Ms. Sarah was raised in Phoenix, USA & Germany. She holds an MFA in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art, London and BA from Georgetown University, Washington DC. She is a practicing artist that has spent her adult life living in New York, London & Copenhagen, exhibiting internationally and now running a project space in Amagerbro. She has worked with numerous arts, design and educational institutions throughout this time, and enjoyed working with a wide range of young and older students. What do I most like about Copenhagen? The ambitious and egalitarian nature of the society, the sense of possibility, and the language! I also love the time and support it offers artistic endeavors.

Ramazan Dicle

MYP English LA, EAL Coordinator

Mr. Dicle is from Adiyaman, Turkey. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the Department of English Linguistics at Hacettepe University in Ankara as a top ranking student in 2010. While at Hacettepe University, he also completed the ELT (English Language Teaching) Program. He holds a Magister degree in Turkish Linguistics from Uppsala University, Sweden. He holds an MA in General Linguistics from Stockholm University with a focus on bilingualism, cognitive linguistics and language typology. Mr Dicle is the EAL Coordinator, the MYP/DP Head of Language Aquisition and the Service as Action leader in MYP.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"Ever since the first time I've stepped foot into Copenhagen, I've been absolutely in love with it. There are many reasons why I'm so taken with this city, but here are my top 5: It is safe. It is tranquil. It is easy to navigate and bike. It is cozy. It is international."

Rune Ploug Hansen

Rune Hansen is from Denmark. He lives with his wife and two children in Hellerup. He has a Master’s Degree in Danish language/literature and History from the University of Copenhagen, and he has a bachelor in Education and Second language acquisition from DPU. Before starting his teaching career he worked 5 years as a marketing/communication consultant in a Danish insurance company. Rune has taught Danish acquisition at a language school for 5 years before he joined International School of Hellerup in 2015.

Luke Quinn

Mr. Quinn is from South East England. In Bristol, he completed a BA Hons in Graphic Design and qualified as an Art and Design teacher, before training as a film editor at the National Film and Television School, receiving an MA from the Royal College of Art. Mr Quinn has led courses at several Art and Design colleges in the UK, as well as continued to edit as a freelancer. Prior to moving to Copenhagen, he lived in Bali, Indonesia, where he worked as an English language teacher.

Ms. Sanford was born and raised in Syracuse, NY, USA. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from Syracuse University and a Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the University at Albany, SUNY. Before moving to Denmark, she taught in various settings at schools throughout New York State and at a summer English program in Tczew, Poland. She has been teaching at ISH since 2015.

Ms. Giraudeau is a French national from Normandy but she has lived abroad all her adult life. She has worked as a French/English teacher for 25 years in three different countries: Ireland, Denmark, and Belgium.She just moved back to Copenhagen after having worked at the European school of Brussels for 9 years.

Mr. Kahraman is passionate about mechanics and electronics in general. He pursued his degree in Physics at Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey. He has spent most of his life abroad living in countries in Asia, Africa to Europe. He finally settled in Copenhagen in 2015 for more diverse experiences to come.

What I most like about Denmark and Copenhagen?

"So far, I am very much inspired by how Copenhagen as a city is well planned, well reserved and the engineering behind it is just fantastic. After all, it is once again the happiest country in the world.."
